From Casual Accounting to

Al Wagner didn’t follow the typical path and that’s exactly why he built something different.

A faith-based entrepreneur and licensed CPA from 1994 thru 2020, Al launched his first firm, The Casual Accountant, back in 1999. It wasn’t just a catchy name. It reflected his belief that professional service could be delivered without pretense, rooted in relationship and integrity. That firm evolved into Independent Accounting Office (IAO) after relocating from Pennsylvania to Marco Island, Florida.

By 2006, Al was experimenting with payroll tech. A national provider was never the answer — not for his clients, and not for the mission he was called to lead. A friend-turned-client insisted: “No, Al. You’re doing our payroll.” That moment sparked what would become IAOPayroll, and soon after, TruPayroll, a dedicated payroll service that eventually expanded to serve hundreds of employers and thousands of employees across 24 states.

But like any mission with momentum, the landscape changed. The core processing platform was slated for retirement, and with it, came the opportunity to build something newer, stronger, more agile.

The launch of OnlinePayroll.Services (OPS) marked the next phase in a journey that began decades earlier — one shaped not only by technical expertise but by unwavering conviction. With a modernized payroll platform and a mission to serve employers directly, OPS now brings the same power and precision Al once offered exclusively to accountants and bookkeepers.
